Paris Hilton & Nicole Richie

WHY PARIS & NICOLE ARE TOGETHER AGAIN!

The Simple Life

It's no secret that Paris Hilton has been feuding for months with Nicole Richie, her Simple Life co-star. Not only do sources say Paris vowed never to work with Nicole again, they add that she's even tried to have her ex-BFF (best friend forever) replaced with her new BFF, Kimberley Stewart, 25 (daughter of rocker Rod Stewart).

But none of that seems to matter to Fox Entertainment president Peter Liguori, who announced on July 28 that the network plans to reunite the feuding exes — who are no longer on speaking terms — for a fourth season of The Simple Life. "I don't know how this whole thing is going to pan out," a friend of Hilton tells Star, "but I have got two words about how Paris is feeling: pissed off."

CONTRACTUALLY BOUND

Sources close to Hilton say that Fox execs were adamant about getting Paris, 24, and Nicole, 23, back together on TV, and threatened to sue the hotel heiress if she reneged on her contract. "[The execs] told her if she didn't do the next season alongside Nicole, she would be sued," says another source.

With no real choice, Paris agreed to do the show, but "as far as Paris is concerned, things are over for good between her and Nicole. She doesn't even like to have Nicole's name mentioned in front of her, let alone spend any time with her."

When asked for comment by Star, Nicole's rep said, "[She's] under contract for another season of The Simple Life." Paris' rep said his client would try, too. "She's a professional," the rep told Star, "and she'll make this work."

The rift between the reality-TV stars started early this year, when Paris' partying ways seemed to clash with Nicole's newfound self-discipline and desire to lose weight. Then jealousy reared its ugly head. On Feb. 5, the same night Paris hosted Saturday Night Live, an envious Nicole reportedly had friends over to watch her costar's infamous sex video, 1 Night In Paris. (Nicole denied the incident.) Then, Paris was supposedly jealous of Nicole's happiness with fiancé DJ AM, 31 (real name: Adam Goldstein).

And when Paris got engaged to Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis, 22, in May, the feud between the two starlets only intensified. Not that they didn't try to reconcile. A source tells Star the two met to try to work things out, but says the get-together ended quickly with "each woman as angry as ever."

ABOVE THE FRAY

But for her part, Nicole may be taking the whole Simple Life soap opera in stride. "I think Nicole is secretly getting a bit of a kick out of the whole situation," says one source.

"Nicole feels like she's totally moved on from the days when she was friends with Paris, and really doesn't want anything more to do with her. But Nicole is pretty level-headed, and I bet she'll keep the peace for the sake of the program."

"Mission" Possible:
Cruise Rolls

Tuesday July 12 9:01 PM ET

The third installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise is finally on.

After much behind-the-scenes drama, shooting commenced Tuesday in Italy on the big-budget sequel, with Rome's water traffic shut down for a speedboat-themed action sequence.

Alias and Lost mastermind J.J. Abrams is directing the Paramount feature, with Tom Cruise returning to star as Special Agent Ethan Hunt, as well as produce M:I-3.

Interest in the film has increased since Cruise professed his crazy love for Katie Holmes. Indeed, before Cruise took to his boat for the first-day shooting, he was spotted kissing his new fiancee, who stayed to watch the action from the banks of the Tiber River.

Before Tuesday, it seemed like getting the film off the drawing the board would be an impossible mission. The film had been dogged by director and cast turnover, budget concerns and reports about Paramount brass getting jittery over Cruise's bizarre public behavior.

Budgetary concerns kept the film on ice for a long stretch, but after Cruise agreed to cut back on the budget--which Paramount insiders said had ballooned to $185 million, the film ramped up preproduction in order to start shooting this month.

"Tom's history with Paramount has made for one of Hollywood's most successful relationships; the opportunity to continue our collaboration with him on Mission: Impossible 3 is everything anyone in show business could hope for," Paramount head Brad Grey enthused last month in a statement.

The budget problems came after Scarlett Johansson bailed on the film in May, citing other film commitments. Also opting out of Mission was Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss, who reportedly became spooked by changes in the script and production delays. Original director, David Fincher, dropped out to shoot another film, and his replacement, Joe Carnahan, was given his walking papers due to "creative differences" with Cruise. The actor finally settled on Abrams.

Joining Cruise in the cast are Keri Russell, Michelle Monaghan, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

The franchise has taken in over $1 billion worldwide to date, according to Paramount, and the studio, in conjunction with Cruise, is pulling out all stops this time around in a bid to not disappoint fans.

Scenes will be shot all over the world, from Asia to Europe, this summer into the fall. However, one place Cruise & Co. won't be filming is inside Berlin's Reichstag. Cruise had hoped to roll cameras inside the famed dome, which draws thousand of tourists each year, but was denied his wish last year when the German Parliament nixed the idea.

Mission: Impossible 3 is slated to open May 5, 2006.
